125 Baby Names Inspired by Nature

Radiant Names for Your Little Nature Boy or Girl

Alas, I'm done bearing children. But if we could welcome just one more, I'd favor a name inspired by nature. Nature-inspired baby names are special but not "kooky." The best ones have a lovely organic quality without being over-the-top crunchy granola. Not that there's anything wrong with granola ;)

Here, some of the coolest nature baby names I've found, along with meanings and origins for the more unusual ones. They come from all sorts of natural elements--trees, flowers, stones and more. Happy hunting, and in the likely event that you're expecting, congratulations!!

Really?? - someone named their kid "Peaches". That poor kid!!!!!! And I thought Gwyneth was a bit crazy for going with "Apple". Fun lens and thanks for lensroll.

Cute concept for a lens, I love it! I featured it on my "Eco-friendly baby tips" lens.

Names are so powerful... have you come across some names that you can immediately associate a personality trait with... I know that I certainly have my list of names that I would never want to name a child because of the personality that seems to go with it.

verymary profile image

verymary 6 years ago from Chicago area Author

@KokoTravel: well, it's subjective, I think -- a name you might think is negative to me might be beautiful, or vice versa. often it's about whether you've known someone in the past with a particular name, and what that person was like :)

I love nature names. Wonderful idea for a lens. One of my choices would be Kaede, which is Japanese for maple leaf.

There were some great names on this list. I like the ones that sound like real names. Rose is better than Petunia. Great lens.

I read something a while back that with names that were not standard, it was putting our children at a disadvantage. There was a study done that showed that kids with the standard names were picked for jobs, etc. before the kids that had unorthodox names. It may be cool for the parents but always remember your kid has to walk through life with these names. People like Johnny Depp don't have to worry because their kids will have an advantage because of their parents. Blessed!

verymary profile image

verymary 4 years ago from Chicago area Author

@tvyps: Interesting point! I think it's a balance. Often kids don't like their unusual names growing up -- until they get to college, when they love being original. As far as career, I think maybe that depends on vocation. It's hard to picture a "Saffron" or "Sage" getting elected president, maybe, but hired as a graphic designer? Sure! [ and don't forget that book Push, by Sapphire ;) ]

If my son had been a daughter I had been thinking of using the name Rain. Beautiful lens!

joannalynn lm profile image

joannalynn lm 4 years ago

Ah, these are beautiful! I wanted a daughter, but my Mom said I'd have an entire basketball team before I'd have a daughter (my boys are tall...all 6'5"). I had problems with my last, and had a hysterectomy, but I might have kept trying for that daughter. I lost one, a boy too. Not that I don't dearly love my boys. My oldest is Clay, who is on your list :). Colton, my youngest means hedgerow, Clay means of the earth. Clay's middle name is Dean, and Dean means leader, so leader of the earth. I didn't know that until later :). So, I want through and made a list of the names I like, and I came up with 12! I narrowed it down to four: Neva, Jonquil, Ilana, and Isla.

verymary profile image

verymary 4 years ago from Chicago area Author

@joannalynn lm: I love Neva & Isla too. Heck, I love this whole list. So sorry for your loss, but obviously you are blessed, too, with those wonderful TALL boys! Thanks for stopping by :)

We opted to go with literary names, but I have always loved nature names, too! I wanted to name a girl Savannah Rose, but we only had boys!

I'm a writer though, and we always need names for characters, so I'm bookmarking your page to come back to the next time a character needs a name.

anonymous 4 years ago

@verymary: No Problem :) Was it really that obvious? At least, I didn't say Katniss or Peeta.

What a great idea for a lens. I like a lot of the names but Summer might be one of my favorites.

Laychee 4 years ago

My favorite are Terra and Celeste. I'm from Slovenia (beautiful country in Europe which gets confused with Slovakia a lot) and we have this vine that's called Teran - it's almost black and sort of thick - reminds me of the land it came from. Anyhow, I learned Spanish and I can see the meaning in some names. I like them a lot :)

MadameJoy 3 years ago

Love this list and my daughter's name is on the list: Ruby. It is the perfect name for her, and gets better all the time. It's so nice giving your daughter a name that so many people comment on how cool it is. Definitely helps to boost her confidence.

@MadameJoy: I agree!!

ChroniclesofaWa 3 years ago

Rowan. I like the sound of that name. My daughter's name starts with the letter "X". It fascinates a lot of people too. So I was hoping there would be a name that starts with it in your list. :)

I do like some of these names but didn't use any of them to name my children. Isn't it funny how some children just fit their names.

Aunt-Mollie 3 years ago

The name 'Adam' from the Bible means 'red earth.' The name 'Jonah' means 'dove.'

I've always liked those two names for boys.

verymary profile image

verymary 3 years ago from Chicago area Author

@Aunt-Mollie: didn't know those were nature inspired! but yes, the reason they are perennially popular is that they're great names :) thanks for the visit.

dessertlover 3 years ago

Oh I just love so many of these! Ruby, Lily, Sage... all so pretty. We named our puppy Luna as well :)

anonymous 3 years ago

I prefer Rowan as a boys name...a strong tree with magical healing powers.

anonymous 3 years ago

How about Teva. It means nature in Hebrew. Shoshana means lily or rose in Hebrew. I would want to name my child a nature based name in Hebrew. So beautiful!

There are some great names on here. I'm not a fan of really super unique names because the kid has to live with it, but there are some really nice nature ones that aren't too out there. I would suggest Sequoia (not sure of spelling), like the tree. I met someone with that name and it was really nice.

This is such a lovely lens. I am a writer and I am always falling in love with names. It was so hard to choose a favourite, so I chose seven - ones I had heard of before and loved...

Adair, Aspen, Bay, Conell, Reed, Talia, and Wren :)
