How to Increase Your Chances of Conceiving Twins

Whether you would think twins are the cutest thing or you would be exhausted taking care of two infants; knowing what increase the odds of conceiving twins may be helpful information. You can either use these ideas to your advantage, or use them to avoid twins. It is up to you!

Your likelihood of having twins is about 1.5 percent, according to statistics from the UK. Of course, if you really want twins, you could just do in-vitro fertilization. However, there are actually some natural things that can also increase your chances of conceiving twins.

How Are Twins Conceived?

Identical twins are much more rare that fraternal twins. Identical twins are the ones that look exactly alike and are of the same gender. These twins develop when one egg and one sperm are joined and fertilized. This fertilized egg then splits into two and develops into two embryos and then babies. These babies end up with exactly the same genetic material. The incidence of identical twins is still considered a medical miracle.

Fraternal twins are more common. They resemble, or do not resemble, one another the same way another other siblings do. They may be the same gender or not. This is because they are basically just two babies that grew and were born on the same day. They form when two different eggs are fertilized by two different sperm.

If you plan to try conceiving twins, you may want to read this WebMD article about what to expect.

Fraternal Twins Are More Common Than Identical

Fraternal twins develop from separate eggs, so the trick to boosting the chance of conceiving twins is to produce and release more eggs at the same time.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is one of the many B Vitamins that pregnant women should take. Folic acid is Vitamin B9. Getting enough of this vitamin can help prevent neural tube defects, like Spina Bifida.

Taking a Folic acid supplement may also increase your chances of conceiving twins. The United States National Academy of Sciences set a daily lower limit of 400 micrograms and an upper limit of 1,000 micrograms for adult women. The upper limit is specified for intake of synthetic forms to avoid toxic effects from an excess amount. However, there have been no know negative effects of high intake of Folate from food sources. Folate is water- soluble and will be disposed of through urination if more than what can be used is supplied.

If your looking to conceive twins, take a 400-1000 micrograms supplement and increase your intake of Vitamin B9 rich foods, including:

  • Spinach
  • Asparagus
  • Turnip greens
  • Lettuce
  • Fortified grains & cereals
  • Egg yolk
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Liver
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Honeydew melon

Everyone knows that almost all of the animal meats and products we buy at the supermarket include added hormones. One of the consequences of eating foods containing these added growth hormones is a higher chance of conceiving twins. So, if you are trying to conceive twins, skip the organic milk and go straight for the hormone-enriched brands.

One study linked increased ovulation in women directly to consuming milk that contained growth hormones. Women who ate these dairy products were found to have higher rates of an insulin like growth hormone (IGF) in their blood system. IGF has been shown to increase the rate of eggs released during ovulation. More eggs can equal more babies.

Birth Control = Twins?
Birth Control = Twins? | Source

Birth Control

When you first discontinue birth control pills, or almost any form of hormonal birth control, your body is confused temporarily. It has to adjust to this "new normal" and most of the time doesn't function exactly the way it is supposed to. During this transition, the chance of conceiving twins (or triplets or more!) goes up.

The older you get, the higher your chances of conceiving twins. In fact, being over 50 gives you pretty good odds for conceiving twins. However, there are also many more risks to the mother and baby when the mother is older than 35. This article describes the higher risk of health issues for pregnancies in women over 45. If you are so desperate to have twins that you plan on waiting until you are over 45 or 50, weigh the risks, benefits, and side effects of your decision carefully. I would not encourage you to get pregnant later in life just for the sake of conceiving twins.

Wild Yams
Wild Yams | Source

Wild Yams

A specific tribe in Africa, the Yoruba, has been found to have an unusually high twin birth rate. When this tribe's diet was studied more closely, it was discovered that they eat wild yams on a daily basis. The exact name of the yam is the cassava.

It has been suggested that the chemical composition of the cassava is the twin culprit. The high levels of certain chemicals are thought tho increase the number of eggs released during ovulation. This story by the BBC explores the high rate of twin births in West Africa, called the "Land of Twins."

Thanks for this! We are all under the assumption that the chances of conceiving twins are slim, unless it runs in the family. However, this can be altered either through surgical or even natural means. While there is a lot of information in this article, it's not all entirely factual. The facts listed aren't entirely true. This is the problem with .com's providing medical advice. The risk of Down's Syndrome increases with the age of men. Not Women. Other birth defects increase with the age of women. Until the age of fertility treatments, conceiving twins was not considered a medical miracle at all, in fact it was considered a genetic abnormality. Its not truly supposed to happen. Twins are indeed a genetic occurrence. Why else would it happen frequently in one family and not at all in another? It's been true on my dad's side--twins galore but not on my moms--not one..err two. Often times it is a hormone issue that causes two eggs to be released but not always. and it does increase with age because the body rids itself of eggs faster as it gets closer to menopause(also when hormones are wacky). And for the record, I'm not just pulling this out of nowhere. I'm in Medical Research. I study this and more all the time. What is the obsession with having twins? Shouldn't one be happy with what they get, especially when others can't have any?

I commented on this hub 17 months ago, stating that my husband would love it if we had twins. I didn't do anything special from this hub (except conceive in the summer, not planned), and guess what? We have twin daughters now. I think the real secret was just reading your hub! Thanks for that! LOL!

Although I admit, I find the hormone/dairy factor so unsettling. It certainly makes sense that this increases your changes of double/triple ovulating, but still another reminder of our responsibility to monitor exactly what we're feeding ourselves & family.

My youngest two are twins, and although my husband and I don't eat meat or dairy the OB did mention that people with healthy eating habits & active lifestyles in general tend to have higher twin pregnancy rates.

Wow. I need to stop eating just about all the foods you described, and it seems like a very cruel joke of Mother nature to give older women twins more often! I can't imagine having twins! A teen and a 6 year old are enough, and these are not even children that came from my body! Interesting hub.
